Best Teacher Ever
A philosophical enquiry about how we learn

Delphi is going to get her very first teacher!  She is very excited at first, certain that she will find learning easy, whatever her friend Plato might think about it.  Over the three main parts of the story she has lessons from three very different teachers - who just happen to be three famous teachers from the history of philosophy!  Delphi discovers that finding the best teacher ever might be harder than she thought.  Based on the ideas of Socrates, Plato, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, this lively and engaging story will help children understand what really makes good teaching and learning.

This download consists of the Best Teacher Ever enquiry, a three-part Delphi Philosophy story and enquiry.

This enquiry focuses on helping children consider what learning means, how we learn and how teaching helps us learn.  This is targeted at helping children develop their metacognition and their learning skills, so they can understand all their learning better.  This works by asking the children to consider three different teachers in the story who teach Delphi in different ways, and the children evaluate the approach of each one.  The first relies on asking questions to help Delphi understand, the second tries to teach her by having her memorise facts and the third encourages her to learn through experience.  The children also capture their initial ideas about the ‘perfect teacher’ at the start of the story and then revisit this after the enquiry at the end to identify how their understanding has developed.  Through participating in the enquiry, the children will also develop their learning, questioning, reasoning and explaining skills.  The story is split into three parts with a prologue and epilogue, and can be taught across 2 full lessons, or any other number of sessions depending on requirements and time available.
